Jane Provoncha's collection for our opening show is a love letter to coastal summer life. We caught up with her to chat about her life as an artist, a go-to paint mix, and family vacations in our artist Q&A series.
When did you start painting?
I didn't start painting until age 33, as a stay at home mom of two kids. I was looking for a creative outlet separate from my life as a parent, and also needed art for my new home in Texas. I painted something for my home, and suddenly began taking commissions!
That said, I've always been a creative, and my youth was filled with creative writing and art. As an adult, I appreciate handwritten letters, physical hard copies of books, scrapbooks, music- I think these are the kinds of interests that indicate there's an artist inside!
What is most rewarding about painting?
There's a feeling of awe you get from a painting you love, and I love chasing that feeling! With abstract work, you often aren't sure the painting is finished until you have that a-ha moment. I love standing back and admiring the work I feel is finally complete. And then I hope a collector will get as lost in the details, colors and emotions as I am!
Do you have a favorite quote about creativity?
It's a quote I heard from the movie, The Dead Poet's Society, and it's about many pursuits being necessary to sustain life, but art being what makes life worth living. I'm all about the emotions we feel from music, words, and art. Painting brings me such joy and fulfills me creatively in this way!
What's your favorite paint mix, and tell us about the color it produces:
So I recently picked up this Liquitex Lime Green, and Master's Touch Prussian Blue, and think they make the most beautiful greens! Learning what paint combos I love has been an adventure, but is so satisfying!
Go-to painting outfit?
I mostly paint at night after my kids have gone to bed, and I'm in a robe, hair up, my glasses on nothing glam! Even when I paint during preschool hours, I usually just throw a robe on. And I always have music playing while painting!
Last TV show you binged?
My husband and I love Outlander! It's probably my favorite show, and we contemplate visiting Scotland someday. Between the Jacobite history, and the William Wallace history, we'd both really enjoy that trip.
Favorite vacation spot?
My husband has always been big into National Parks, so we've taken our young kids to Yellowstone and Glacier. Our kids are both Junior Rangers!
Coffee or tea?
Coffee! I look forward to my two cups every morning. In a perfect world, I'd be up early and have my coffee in solitude, but I'm a night owl and often struggle to make that happen!
