In the Studio with Pam Wingard

In the Studio with Pam Wingard

We loved chatting with Pam Wingard about her inspiration, creative journey, and life as an artist. Read all about the artist behind her collection of joyful and vibrant paintings for the Studio Collective's opening art show.

What is your earliest memory of being creative?

I remember sitting at my grandmother’s kitchen table sketching cartoons and drawing the fashion ads in the newspaper. Although I have a background in art and design, I didn’t start painting until my kids were young and I quit my full-time job to stay home with them.

Did you always want to be an artist?

I did! But I didn’t know that I could actually make a career a full-time working artist. I began college as an art major and finished with a business degree. I went back to school later for another degree in graphic design. But I never imagined that I could actually get to paint as my job!

Favorite quote about art?

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”
― Pablo Picasso

Do you have a pre-painting ritual?

Absolutely! For someone who loves what they do, I seem to procrastinate getting to my studio. I read somewhere if you provide yourself with a routine that triggers your brain to know that it is time to go to work. I make myself a cup of coffee or tea, turn on the exact same playlist, and begin to mix paint. The playlist seems to really help!

Do you have a favorite artist from history?

Henri Matisse has always been my favorite because of his use of color. I love the Fauvists and the way they used strong brushstrokes and unexpected color.

Do you have a go-to painting outfit?

My go-to painting outfit is shorts or jeans and a t-shirt from my collection from places I've visited. I started buying them when I travel, and they are mostly from a restaurants or bars or other fun places that I loved visiting.

What kind of music is playing in your studio?

A Spotify playlist that is an eclectic mix of country, classic rock, and a few ‘yacht rock’ songs too.

Last book you read that you loved?

I loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Favorite place in the world?

Our family has gone to Amelia Island, FL since my sons were small. It’s my favorite place in the world. Next to Italy….
