Did you always want to be an artist?
When I look back on it, yes. My favorite class was always art. I had artsy birthday parties, I was the one on the trip planning around art museums and exhibitions. I majored in art, I worked at a gallery in New York, but then I became an interior designer because it was easy and I am good at it.
Who inspired you to become an artist?
A number of years ago, my creative aunt told me to “give up this interior design stuff and become an artist already”. She was so matter of fact, said it was my true calling. I balked. At that point I was dabbling in creating art again, but I was proud of my interior design business and was focused on working on a line of by the yard textiles (which I wouldn’t end up officially debuting until 2024). In late 2021 her words finally seemed to resonate and I decided she was right. I still love the design work I do, but art is my true passion.
How do you want people to feel when they look at your art?
I want them to feel joy. I want that feeling to resonate throughout their day, their week, their month, for years to come. I want to draw them in for a closer look, finding something to delight in every time they take a glance or stop for a deeper look.
What inspires you?
The outside world. Pure and simple. My all time favorite artist [Joan Mitchell] said it best: “I carry my landscapes around with me.” I am predominantly drawn to the natural landscape, the colors, the movement, the magic, yet I find the juxtaposition between the constructed landscape and the organic one fascinating. The contrast and connection, how the two intertwine, particularly informs the process of my mixed media work.
What's your go-to painting outfit?
Apron, paint-splattered jeans, etc. My grandaddy went all over the globe and had the most amazing leather suitcases covered in stickers from all the hotels he stayed in. I was lucky enough to inherit one and when I opened it, there were a bunch of his old button down shirts. They were custom made with his initials and a tag noting the month and year each was made. I paint in one of those long forgotten shirts.
Favorite place in the world?
The beach. Specifically Pine Knoll Shores.
Favorite vacation spot?
France. I cannot narrow it down more than that, too many favorites and places I have yet to explore.
Favorite snack you keep stocked in your fridge?
Delicious cheese. My five year old has taken notice and now asks to have a cheese party, complete with crackers and fruit.
